Training in Ken Yu Kai

"Ken" in Japanese is translated to mean 'Fist', "Yu", 'Friendship' and "Kai" to mean 'Association'. Shihan Ishikawa particularly chose 'Friendship' and 'Fist' , in hope that parctitioners of Karate, who have a common interest and love in the art, would grow in skill (of the Fist) and of personal relationships among karate members.

Ken Yu Kai teaches karate as an art of self-defence. In the beginning, kihon (basics) are emphasized. Until the beginner has grasp the fundamentals of basic karate movement, he is not allowed to participate in sparring.

At Ken Yu Kai, like many other Shitoryu organisations, 'semi-contact' free sparring instead of full contact sparring is preferred. This is to prevent unecessary injuries from occuring and allows the karate practitioner to perfect his form while excecuting his techniques and defensive maneuvers.

Kata is practised throughout every level of the karateka's training. The Karate student must take a grading before advancing to the next higher rank. At Ken Yu Kai, grading is conducted once every 3 months. The student must attend at least 65% of the total number of lessons for that quarter to qualify him for grading.

Grading consists of basic movements and techniques, kata, one-step sparring and for senior belters, sparring. To pass for a particular grade, the student must exhibit sufficient skill to satisfy the requirements for the grade. At Ken Yu Kai, kata plays a major part in grading scores.

Dojo etiquette is observed. For example, entering and leaving the dojo would require the student to bow to show respect. Paying respects to the Shihan or seniors are also required by bowing and greeting 'Osu'. Discipline is an important part of Karate practise. During training, fidgiting and talking unecessarily are best be refrained.
